Local Roundup: Portal girls hold off MCHS in opener

    MT. VERNON — The Portal Lady Panthers had to fight off a furious fourth-quarter comeback in their season opener but held on to beat Montgomery County 41-40 on Tuesday.
    The Panthers (1-0) took a 17-point lead into the fourth quarter and rebounded the potential go-ahead shot to hold on for the win.
    Breyonna Raymond scored 17 points for Portal. Chandelier Morgan finished with 12, and Shiann Hagins finished with 11.
    Portal faces Bryan County on the road on Saturday.

PHS JV shuts down Montgomery
    MT. VERNON — The Portal girls junior varsity squad ran away from Montgomery County 33-10 on Tuesday in the season opener.
    Cheryl Lee led the Panthers with 14 points and Arieanna Wiggins added 11.

GSU's Hewitt earns SoCon honor
    SPARTANBURG, S.C. — After a week in which he averaged 27.7 points per game, Georgia Southern’s Jelani Hewitt has been named SoCon Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. The redshirt junior from Miramar, Fla., scored 38 points in the Eagles’ overtime loss to Campbell on Saturday night. It is the second time Hewitt has been named player of the week in four opportunities this season.
    On Saturday night he pulled down 11 boards to record his first career double-double and added four steals with three assists in 44 minutes of action. He was the first Eagle since 2010-11 to score over 30 points in his game and set a new career-high for scoring.
    Overall for the week, Hewitt shot 46 percent from the field and knocked down 8-of-23 from 3-point range and was 23-of-31 from the free-throw line.
