    BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets took two games from East Laurens Thursday in the first round of the Region 3-AA softball tournament to advance to the next round and clinch a spot in the GHSA Class AA state playoffs.
    With the first game tied in the bottom of the seventh with one out and Effie Manahan on third, East Laurens snagged a lineout for the second out of the inning.
    In an effort to double up Manahan, an errant throw went past the third baseman and allowed Manahan to score the winning run.
    The Jackets used small ball to eliminate ELHS and secure a spot in the next round, including a bunt that allowed Nira Byrd to score from second base in SEB's 8-1 win.
    Taylor Wilkes pitched a complete game to close out the evening.
    Saturday, Southeast Bulloch will go on the road to face Bleckley County in a round-two doubleheader Saturday at noon.

SEB JV takes down Metter
    The Southeast Bulloch junior varsity football team defeated Metter 26-7 Thursday.
    Freshman tight end Justin Odum scored on a pass from Cameron Duncan, and rushing touchdowns were scored by Andy Harlow and a pair by Blake Price.

Lady Eagles face tough road trip
    The Georgia Southern women’s soccer team begins a four-game road trip this weekend, taking on No. 25 UNC Greensboro at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m. The Eagles will then face Elon on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. in Burlington, N.C.
    The Eagles enter the weekend with a 4-5-0 record, 1-1-0 in the Southern Conference, after splitting a pair of SoCon matches the first weekend of conference play. Georgia Southern defeated Wofford 3-0 with a pair of goals by Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) before falling 3-1 to Furman.
    With seven goals on the season, Oland leads the conference while climbing to 26th in the NCAA Division I. Four other Eagles have also scored at least one goal.
    Goalkeepers Missy Meyer (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.) have combined to make 34 saves on the season, with Merson making 22 saves in seven starts.
    UNC Greensboro, ranked No. 25 in the nation after sweeping Chattanooga and Samford on the road on the first weekend of SoCon matchups, enters the match with a 7-1-1 record (2-0-0 SoCon). Jenn Partenheimer leads the Spartans with four goals, while Lauren Hein has scored three times with one assist. Kelsey Kearney has made 33 saves while allowing just seven goals in nine matches. The junior also has four shutouts on the season.
    The Eagles have faced UNC Greensboro 14 times. The Spartans lead the all-time series 11-3. Fans can view live streaming and live stats at www.uncgspartans.com.
    Elon is led by Brittany Hallberg, who has scored four goals with two assists. Alanna Winsper has three goals and three assists, while Kimmie Krauss has three goals with a pair of assists. Elon carries a 6-3-1 overall record, 1-1-0 SoCon, after an opening weekend split with a 3-2 loss at Chattanooga following a 1-0 victory over Samford. Goalkeeper Kristen Haney has recorded 36 saves while allowing 12 goals in 10 matches.
