Local Roundup: Former Portal Panther signs with KC Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday that the club has signed fifth-round draft pick LB Cameron Sheffield.
Sheffield (6-2, 257) was the second of Kansas City’s two selections in the fifth round (142nd overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. He saw action in 47 games (37 starts) at Troy, recording 161 tackles (109 solo) with 15.0 sacks (-85.0 yards) and 28.5 tackles for loss. He added 55 QB pressures, an interception, eight passes defensed, five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Sheffield was an all-state selection as a senior at Portal High School in Portal, Georgia, producing 74 tackles and 11.0 sacks during his final prep campaign.

Pry to speak at luncheon

Eagle Football Defensive Coordinator Brent Pry will speak at the Greater Savannah Eagle Club Business Luncheon on Thursday, July 22, updating Georgia Southern fans as the beginning of preseason camp draws near.  Sponsored by the Georgia Southern University Office of Alumni Relations, the luncheon is held at the Johnny Harris Banquet facility at 1651 East Victory Drive in Savannah, 31404.
Serving lines open at 11:45 a.m. The program begins at 12:20 p.m. and the luncheon concludes at 1 p.m. The cost of the buffet is $10 per person, which includes the meal, sweet tea, dessert, tax and gratuity.
Due to NCAA regulations, students in grades 9-12 are not encouraged to attend this Eagle Club event.

SEBMS to hold softball tryouts
BROOKLET — Southeast Bulloch Middle School softball tryouts will be held August 2 from 3:30-5:45 p.m. Interested players must have a current physical and parent permission form from the front office. Students should bring their own gear to the tryout and arrange transportation at 5:45 p.m.

Summer GSU baseball update

    Eight current Georgia Southern Eagles are playing across the country in Summer Leagues.
    Teammates Eric Phillips and Shawn Payne both made their respective summer leagues’ All-Star Teams. Phillips, a rising junior, leads the Luray Wranglers of the Valley League with a .356 batting average.         He has started 24 of his 26 appearances, collecting four doubles, one home run and eight RBI. With an on-base percentage of .452, Phillips has scored 16 times and owns a .953 fielding percentage. Phillips helped lead the North All-Star team to a 9-2 victory over the South in the Valley League’s All-Star game July 11.
    Competing in the Sunbelt League representing the Eagles are Payne (Atlanta Crackers), Brent Pugh, Atlanta, Ga., native (Signature Park Grizzlies) and Garren Palmer, Dalton, Ga., native (Atlanta Crackers).
    Matt Murray, a member of the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League, owns a 1-0 record in 21.1 innings pitched with a 2.53 ERA. Murray earned a 5-2 win over the Falmouth Commodores in his fourth start of the summer.  The Spring City, Pa., native threw six innings in the win, striking out four while surrendering only one run.
    Victor Roache has helped lead the Delaware Cows in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League to a 13-11 record. He is batting .286 with a double.
    Participating in the New York Collegiate Baseball League, Arthur Owens has compiled a .267 batting
average in 22 starts with the Glens Falls Golden Eagles. The rising sophomore has scored 10 times and driven in nine RBI using two doubles. Also in the NYCBL, Michael Hester has made five appearances for the Allegany County Nitros. Hester has pitched eight innings, surrendering only one run and one extra-base hit. The senior has struck out nine batters and has a 1-0 record with a 1.12 ERA.
