Bulloch Academy girls start off season with big win
BAcolor

The Bulloch Academy Lady Gators overpowered Robert Toombs Christian Academy 21-5 in the third quarter to walk away with a 49-26 in the seventh annual Lady Gator Classic Tuesday.

In other games, Hilton Head Christian Academy whipped Frederica 50-36 and Crisp Academy eased past Pinewood Christian 38-30.

Bulloch (1-0) took a slim 15-14 lead into the lockerroom after sophomore Page Spence drilled a 16-footer with 1.2 seconds left on the clock.

BA head coach Paul Webb must have challenged his girls at halftime because they came out with blood in their eyes. Senior Anna Newton, who had been quiet in the first half with just one bucket, pounded a four-footer off the glass to start a 9-0 run. She led all scorers with 13.

The Lady Crusaders netted five quick points to cut the score to 24-19 before the Bulloch went off again, this time on a 10-0 run to take a 36-19 advantage by the end of the third. Newton had eight points in the eight-minute period.

The python-like squeeze of the BA full-court press and man defense wore down the Lady Crusaders (0-1) in the second half. BA upped its advantage to 41-19 early in the fourth on an old-fashioned three-point play from Newton at the 6:08 mark.

Webb substituted freely in the quarter, giving his bench personnel plenty of playing time.

Sophomore Ashley Burke, who had 10 points on the night, opened the action in the first quarter. Both teams ran well, had crisp passing and good defense but BA surged out to a 6-0 lead.

RTCA battled toe-to-toe with Bulloch in the second and took an 11-10 late in the quarter on a putback by Natalie Alexander with 3:40 left. Megan Orrell led a surge which gave the visitors from Lyons a 14-11 lead with 1:25 remaining in the half. She and Sydni Collins paced the Lady Crusaders with eight points each.

In the opening game, HHCA pulled away in the fourth quarter for the Lady Eagles’ first win of the season. Audrey Bensch led with 13 points and Andy Anderson had 11. For Frederica, Nia Pressley dumped in a game-high 18.

In the final game, PCA took an 11-10 lead after the first quarter but the visitors from Cordele took a 16-15 halftime advantage. The Lady Panthers went up 25-21 by the end of the third and survived a furious PCA rally in the fourth.

Madi Mitchell led Crisp with 19 points and Jay Jay Yawn added eight. For Pinewood, Kaylyn Hagan had nine and Kate Miller contributed six.

The tournament continues today when the Lady Gators take on Crisp Academy at 5:30 p.m. and Robert Toombs battles Brentwood at 7 p.m.
