Bulloch Academy had three girls in double figures as the Lady Gators whipped Thomas Jefferson Academy 53-26 Wednesday in the second day of the Lady Gator Classic.
Anna Newton netted a game-high 15 points while Haley Burke scored 13 and Taylor Collins added 10 in the contest.
In the afternoon game, Trinity Christian School of Dublin pounded Flint River Academy 75-35 behind the incredible 33-point performance from Georgia Southern Lady Eagle early signee Anna Claire Knight. Jordan Mimbs added 10 for the Lady Crusaders and Meghan Gregg had 12 for Flint River.
First Presbyterian Christian Academy of Hinesville nipped David Emanuel Academy 52-50 in the second game. Aaliyah Wilson and Briana Reece scored 18 points each while Emone Fisher added 12 in the furious second-half comeback. For DEA, Jerica Burnett netted 22 points while Caitlyn Lamm drilled four three-pointers and Jasmine Phillips added 10 points.
In the finale, Bulloch (2-0) came out with a vicious man press to disrupt the Lady Jags. Newton scored eight of her points in the opening quarter, displaying a sweet mid-range jumper. Collins battled hard down low as the Lady Gators utilized their speed and quickness to take a 15-0 lead by the buzzer. Point guard Rachel Gilbert, forward Burke and guard Lauren Dennard were smooth around the perimeter and handled the TJA defense with ease. Bulloch’s defense was aggressive and smothering.
Anna Brett hit a bucket with 5:40 in the second quarter to put the Lady Jags on the board. BA’s Burke woke up in the second quarter, slashing and cutting her way to eight points as BA outpointed TJA 17-9 in the quarter for a 32-9 halftime lead. Chelsey Toulson had three of her team-high 10 points for the Lady Jags.
Bulloch’s first wave of reserves, Mary Margaret Reeves, Amelia Akins, McKenzie Webb and Marianna Peebles, saw plenty of action in the latter part of the second quarter and the majority of the third. Still, Bulloch outscored the squad from Louisville 15-8 for a 47-17 lead.
In the fourth, head coach Paul Webb’s third wave of Mary Kate Thomas, Ashlee Lanier, Brooke Gilbert, Danielle Atkinson, Lindsey Brannen, Madison Poole took the floor and got some valuable playing time in the six-minute period.
The Lady Gator Classic continues today with the three final games; Thomas Jefferson taking on John Milledge at 5:30 p.m., Bulloch Academy battling Frederica at 7 p.m. and Trinity Christian facing First Presbyterian at 8:30 p.m.
