Bulloch Academy scored a total of 28 goals as both the girls and boys teams routed squads from Memorial Day School in a non-region soccer doubleheader Tuesday.
Senior Haley Burke and freshman Cate Williams scored three goals each as the Lady Gators overpowered the Lady Matadors, 13-0, in the early game.
In the boys match, junior Chase Merrill netted four scores and classmate Themba Twala scored three times to lead the Gators to a 15-0 victory over the Matadors.
The BA girls (6-5) were aggressive from the opening whistle, crashing the MDS line, fighting for loose balls and taking shot after shot. The Lady Gators scored four times in the first 10 minutes.
Bulloch built a 9-0 lead by the 19-minute mark when the officials stopped the first half by invoking the mercy rule. The second half was shorted from 40 minutes to 20.
“Coming off of a hard-fought game last night with Westminster (a 6-1 loss),” BA girls coach Matthew Meeks said, “we needed to come out, relax a little and have the opportunity to think and to see what we are supposed to do.”
Strikers Burke and Williams got plenty of shots on goal but so did some other Lady Gators.
“With a game like today, it’s good that you can get to use other players and give them quality minutes,” Meeks said. “Every day and every match that we get out on the field is a chance for them to get together, develop team chemistry and have confidence in playing together and having success. That’s how we are going to get the program going in the right direction.”
The Lady Matadors crossed midfield just twice and did not attempt a shot on goal.
Freshman Tatum Blitch scored twice, and other goals were scored by senior Allison Anderson, junior Maddie Marsh (who was celebrating her 17th birthday), sophomore Brooke Gilbert and freshman Claire Hiller.
The Lady Gators travel to Midway on Friday to play First Presbyterian Day School at the St. James Field.
The BA boys (5-4) were without leading scorer J.P. Padilla, a sophomore who was sidelined with injured ribs, but it made no difference in the final outcome.
The Gators were ferocious in their attacks and built up a 10-0 lead just as fast as the girls had. Merrill’s three goals came in the first 20 minutes, while Twala and sophomore Bill Sheppard added two goals apiece.
In the shortened second half, Bulloch added five more goals in 14 minutes to end the game with the scoring mercy rule.
Senior Asa Johnson scored twice, while Merrill and Johnson added to their totals for the win. Other scorers for BA were senior Antoine Montassier, junior John Gowan, sophomore Hendrik Haase and freshman Raybon Anderson.
The Gators will wait until after spring break next week to get back into action, traveling to Martinez with the BA girls April 10 to take on Region 4-AAA foe Augusta Prep.
