Athlete of the Week: Schuman scores for SCHS

Screven County’s girls soccer program is still relatively new, but Rochelle Shuman is making sure that her name will be remembered by the ranks of Lady Gamecock soccer players for years to come.
Already the school’s all-time leader in scoring, Shuman added two more goals to her total in Screven’s 10-0 win over Laney Tuesday in Augusta. The senior forward’s career goal count now stands at 52 and Shuman leads all Gamecocks in scoring this season with 11 in just six games.
“Rochelle is a great player and a great leader,” said Screven coach Terry Markovcic. “She isn’t the most vocal person on the field, but she works hard and leads by example.”
With Shuman leading the way, Screven is poised to contend for its first region title.
The Gamecocks are 5-1 and have allowed just one goal — in a 1-0 loss to Dublin last week — so far this season.
“Our offense is pretty good this season and Rochelle is a big part of that,” said Markovcic. “We’ve been getting early goals in most of our games. That has helped our defense to relax and give us great performances so far.”
Shuman and the Gamecocks will host Dublin next week in what figures to be a decisive game in the Region 3-AA race.
