Athlete of the Week: Redskins retire Howard's number

Bryan County softball player Tiffany Howard

For four years, Bryan County softball fans looked on in awe as Tiffany Howard dominated at the plate and on the pitching rubber.
This past fall marked the last season that Lady Redskins got to see Howard on the BCHS softball diamond and — after a ceremony held last week — the same can be said for her No. 1 jersey.
“Tiffany is the most versatile all-around player I’ve had the privilege to coach,” Bryan coach Al Butler said.
“She has always been a special player and always gone above and beyond what could have been asked of her.”
It’s only fitting that no future Redskin will wear her number as Howard’s accomplishments surpassed multiple team and state marks.
This season, Howard’s 80 hits topped the single-season record of — well — Tiffany Howard (she set the previous mark with 73 hits in 2010) and her 243 career hits are the most all-time.
Howard also owns the Georgia single-season steals record with 69 this season, and she finished second all-time in single-season batting average with an astounding .656, which she accomplished this season.
