Athlete of the Week: BA's Barber a cut above

Meghan Barber, Bulloch Academy tennis player.

When the Augusta Prep girls tennis team travelled to Forest Heights Country Club for a match with Bulloch Academy on Tuesday afternoon, it was in for a big surprise.
Augusta Prep hadn’t lost a regular season match in more than three years, but Bulloch Academy junior Meghan Barber and her Lady Gators teammates pulled off a 3-2 victory.
“We knew that it was going to be tough competition going in,” Barber said of Bulloch Academy’s opponent, which has won three of the last six GISA state titles. “We just tried to stay focused and play our best. We showed that we can be a great team, too.”
Though the Gators won three of the five matchups, Barber was able to notch Bulloch’s only victory in singles play, defeating Sophie Pollax in an 8-5 comeback win.
“I have beaten (Pollax) before,” Barber said, “But I still had to play my best.”
With the big victory now behind them, the Gators — who remain undefeated on the season — are now setting their sights to bigger and better things.
“We want to do well in the postseason,” Barber said. “We definitely think that we have what it takes to go all the way.”
