SYLVANIA — The Screven County girls tennis team punched a ticket to its 19th consecutive state quarterfinal appearance by blanking Pierce County 5-0 Tuesday in the second round of the GHSA Class AA state tournament.
The fifth-ranked Gamecocks improved to 19-4 on the year and will host top-ranked and unbeaten Thomasville, the Region 1-AA champion. The matchup date is undetermined but will be sometime before May 6. Screven has advanced to the quarterfinals every year since the GHSA started the current team tennis format in 1990.
Winners for the Gamecocks were: Kate Blackburn (6-0, 6-0), Evan Sheppard (4-6, 7-5, 10-3), Katheryn Wells (6-3, 6-1), Carter Mills/Missy Zeagler (6-3, 6-1) and Kelsey Forehand Sidnee Weaver (6-2, 6-0).

Winners for SCHS were: Eddie Waters/Murphy Frankhouser (6-1 , 7-5) and Jim Freeman (won by default because of injury).
The Gamecocks finished the year with a 16-7 mark.
Eagle baseball begins homestand tonight
Georgia Southern returns to J.I. Clements Stadium tonight to host to Jacksonville, the first of eight straight home games. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Eagles (25-18 overall, 10-8 Southern Conference) are looking to extend their five-game winning streak.
Trent Franzago is slated to make his first collegiate start. The freshman right-hander is 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA. He has allowed only three earned runs over his last seven innings pitched.
Georgia Southern's homestand continues this weekend as The Citadel travels to J.I. Clements. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with a 6 p.m. start on Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Prior to Saturday's game is another Clements Tailgate. The event starts at 4 p.m. and is free to fans. Sonny's BBQ will provide pulled pork sandwiches, potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw and drinks.
During Sunday's game, Georgia Southern will sponsor “Baseball for the Boys”. All children ages 14 and under will be admitted for free with a paid adult. During the game, GSU representatives will take donations to support Joseph's Home for Boys in Bulloch County, which serves to benefit local children in need.

METTER — Twelve different Yellow Jackets scored Tuesday to help Southeast Bulloch down Metter 12-1.
David McCarty earned the win and combined with Jordan Davis and Matt Conner for 12 strikeouts.
Top hitters for the Jackets (15-9, 9-5) were: Tony Raymond (1-for-2), Justin Daniels (1-for-2, RBI triple), McCarty (2-for-2, two doubles), Jake Manahan (1-for-1, RBI), Bobby Robbins (1-for-1, two-run double) and Tucker Bettis (1-for-1, two RBIs).
The Jackets conclude regular season play Friday with a 5 p.m. home game against Toombs County.
Diamond Devils top Evans to advance
AUGUSTA — Crawford Simmons struck out 11 and tossed a complete game shutout to lift Statesboro to a 5-0 win over Evans in the semifinals of the Region 3-AAAA playoffs Tuesday.
Simmons allowed two hits and walked none while improving to 7-1 on the year.
The Devils advance to the region title game where they’ll face Greenbrier Friday. Game time is TBA.

Georgia Southern football coach Chris Hatcher and Southern Boosters will host the 2008 Georgia Southern University Savannah Area Golf Classic, Friday, May 9. The event will be held at the Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah. The golfing event will benefit Georgia Southern University's Football program.
The entry fee is $90 per player and includes a meal after the round and two drink tickets during the tournament. Hole sponsorships are available for $100. Signs acknowledging the sponsor will be located on each tee box. Tee-time is 1:00 pm. Awards and Coach Hatcher's remarks will be held at the conclusion.
Players of all skill levels are welcome to participate in this event. The captain's choice format will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
Those individuals or businesses interested in becoming a hole sponsor or playing in the event should call the Southern Boosters Office at (912) 681-5520. Deadline to sign up is May 1.

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 27. Georgia Southern junior designated hitter Ty Wright was named National Hitter of the Week, while Miami freshman left-hander Chris Hernandez was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
Wright finished the week batting .500 (12-24) with five doubles, one triple and two home runs. He scored seven runs and drove in 12, posting a 1.042 slugging percentage. Wright was 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts and recorded a .538 on-base percentage as the Eagles went 5-0 last week.
The Montrose native became the second Eagle this month to hit for the cycle in consecutive innings during game three of the Wofford series (single in 1st inning; 2-run home run in 2nd inning; RBI triple in 3rd; 2-run double in 4th). He joins David Richardson, who accomplished the feat during game one at the College of Charleston.
During the three-game sweep at Wofford, Wright went 7-for-14 with five runs and seven RBI. Earlier in the week, Wright hit a game-winning, two-run double in the 11th inning in a 6-4 win at Kennesaw State.
Overall in his first year with the Eagles (25-18 overall), Wright improved his batting average to .409 (54-for-132) starting 30 times in 35 games played mainly as the leadoff hitter.
