ALBANY — Area teams competed at the GHSA track and field state championships this weekend. Here are the results.
Screven County’s 400-meter relay team of Kayla Parrish, Brittany Lawton, Stephanie Scott and Lauren Lipsy won a state championship with a time of 48.805.
Parrish, Lawton, Scott and Leticia Sampson finished fourth in the 1600m relay at 4:09.65.
Parrish also took home sixth in the 400m with a time of 1:01.517 and Scott was eighth in the same event with a 1:01.549.
Lipsey finished fifth in the 100m with a 12.608.
In the 3200m final, Screven County’s Casmeyona Austin finished sixth with a time of 13:00.85. In the long jump, Imani McCoy placed sixth with a jump of 16-4 1/2 for SC.
Austin finished in eighth place for SCHS in the 1600-meter final with a time of 5:59.77.
The Lady Gamecocks finished in 10th place overall with 19 points.
Statesboro’s Gwennetta Jones was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 38-8. The 1600m relay team of Susanna McKee, Kate Brunson, Queta Davis and Raven Thomas finished sixth with a 4:08.322.
Thomas also finished third in the 400m with a 56.733.
The Blue Devils finished in 19th place with 11 points.
Southeast Bulloch’s Sarah Herndon finished fourth in the discus throw with a toss of 105-11. Herndon also finished seventh in the shot put with a 34-5 1/2.
Candace McElveen finished ninth in the pole vault and Sarah Burgess participated in the 1600-meter run for SEB.
Claxton’s 1600-meter realy team of Desi Holland, Dan’Esha Grant, Kris Johnson and Lacreasha Brewton finished seventh with a 4:19.766.
Johnson also placed seventh in the 800m with a 2:36.245.
In the 100m hurdles, Zandra Lake of Jenkins County was eighth with a 19.09.
Cholonda Goodman from Newnan broke the Class AAAAA 100-meter record.
Goodman set the only record of the day with a time of 11.45 seconds.
Collins Hill won it third consecutive Class AAAAA state title — its fourth since 2003, while Redan placed second. Southwest DeKalb was crowned for the second straight season in Class AAAA, Therrell won back-to-back titles in AAA and Landmark Christian claimed the single-A championship.
North Oconee won Class AA but had the closest team race out of the rest, outlasting Wesleyan by two points.
GSU softball splits with UTC
The Chattanooga softball team erupted for five runs in the seventh inning of game two to salvage a split with Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.
GSU took game one 3-1 while UTC won game two 9-4.
The win in the nightcap gives Chattanooga (35-18, 13-4) the Southern Conference title. Georgia Southern (33-28, 12-8) remains in third place with one game to play.
Junior Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) provided all of GSU’s offense in game one with a three-run homer, her ninth of the season. She added another in game two, capping off a four-run rally with yet another three-run bomb.
Senior Melissa Laliberte (Cobourg, Ontario, Canada) held the Lady Mocs to just two hits through six innings. She allowed a single and walked three in the seventh to account for UTC’s lone run but escaped without further damage. She improves to 16-11.
Brooke Loudermilk (13-7) allowed six hits and three earned runs for UTC.
After Siliga and the Eagles rallied with a four-spot in the fifth, Chattanooga answered immediately with a Laci Upchurch home run to tie the game.
The Lady Mocs put the game away with five runs in the seventh, thanks in part to three walks, including two to lead off the inning.
Toni Hutchison broke the deadlock with a double and after another walk, Upchurch followed with a two-run single.
Kaitlin Holloway (9-2) earned the win in relief while sophomore Kristan Glover (Evans, Ga.) took the loss (3-7).
The series (and regular season) concludes today at 1 p.m.
