LOCAL ROUNDUP: Claxton's hopes crushed in late-inning collapse

    CLAXTON — Baconton Charter scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Claxton in a wild finish Saturday in the first round of the GHSA Class AA state baseball playoffs.
    Zac Mosley hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to put the Tigers (20-5) up 6-0. The lead wouldn’t hold.
    The Blazers came back to tie the game, then eventually win it with two outs. Baconton will move in, traveling to Pacelli or hosting Turner County.

Gators sent home by Piedmont
    MONTICELLO — Bulloch Academy fell 10-5 in Game Two of the GISA Class AA state baseball playoffs Saturday, eliminating the Gators in round one.
    Bulloch had a 5-1 lead into the fifth, but couldn’t hold on to the 1-seeded Cougars.
    Taylor Burke took the loss for BA. Matthew Sapp had a solo homer for the Gators after blasting a two-run shot in Game one on Friday, a 6-3 Bulloch loss.
    Piedmont will host the winner of Randolph Southern/Griffin Christian in the second round.

GHSA track and field results
    JEFFERSON — The 2008 GHSA state boys track and field championships were held Saturday.
    In Class AAAA, the Statesboro 1600-meter relay team of Mario Jackson, Patrick Jenkins, Jarie Wharton and Joseph Mainer ran a 3:20.11, good enough for fifth place. The time also set a school record.
    In the Class AA 400-meters, Southeast Bulloch’s Arsenio Wright finished fourth with a time of 51.08.
    Teammate Gerald Williams finished fourth in the 200m with a time of 22.46 and the SEB 400-meter relay team of — finished fifth with a time of.
    In Class A, Charles Reynolds of Jenkins County ran a 15.90 in the 110m hurdles, good enough for sixth place. Jermey Brewton of Claxton was siixth in the 300m hurdles with a time of 40.84.
    Christian Taylor overwhelmed his competition again.
    The Sandy Creek senior won his third individual title of the state meet on Saturday, running the 400-meter in 46.60 seconds to break the Class AAA record he set the day before by nearly six-tenths of a second.
    Taylor also anchored Sandy Creek’s winning relay teams in the 400 and 1600 meters. The Florida signee, who finished the meet with an individual-maximum 35 points for the second straight year, established all-classification marks in the triple jump and high jump on Thursday.
    Not surprisingly, Sandy Creek took its second straight AAA title, beating second-place Flowery Branch by 191⁄2 points.
    McEachern, the AAAAA champion in 2007, tied Marietta, which won the state’s highest classification the year before, for this year’s championship.
    Both teams had 46 points. McEachern’s William Wynne won all-performance honors in the 110 high hurdles (13.52 seconds) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (36.28). He also anchored the 1600 relay team that finished second to Douglass by six-thousandths of a second.
    D’Angelo Cherry erased worries that a tight hamstring would affect his burst in the 100m. Though the Mt. Zion-Jonesboro senior withdrew from the Class AAAA 200 meters, he ran the 100m in 10.33 seconds to break the all-classification career state mark he set on Friday by eight-hundredths of a second.
    Chapel Hill edged Tucker by one point to take the AAAA title. Blair O’Bryant’s victory in the 800m was the clincher as he won the race in 1 minute, 56.66 seconds, edging McIntosh’s Vince Brown by one-hundredth of a second.
    In Class AA, Jeff Davis won the championship with 58 points, one better than Swainsboro’s total. Deryan Sims raced to a victory in the 400 dash at 49.15 seconds and later helped the 1600 relay team that held off Swainsboro by 1.45.
    Landmark Christian took the Class A trophy with 68 points, nine more than second-place Athens Christian. Walter Lenard and Durrell Smith dominated the hurdles, with Lenard’s 15.01 seconds beating Smith by six-hundredths of a second in the 110m and Smith’s 39.55 finish nearly three-tenths of second faster than his teammate.

SprintSouth registration
    The SprintSouth AAU track and field program is still accepting registration for the summer.

Lee Hill hoops camp
    Statesboro boys’ basketball coach Lee Hill will hold a his summer basketball camp, starting May 26 and running through May 30.
    Rising 2nd through 5th graders will practice from 8-11 a.m., while rising 6th through 9th graders will go from 1-4 p.m.

BA basketball camp
    Bulloch Academy head basketball coach Chandler Dennard invites local and area boys and girls going into grades 2-5 to sign up for the 2008 Gator Basketball summer camp.
    The annual camp, conducted by coach Dennard and his staff, runs from May 27-30 from 9 a.m.-noon. This opportunity will provide campers with basic basketball fundamentals of passing, dribbling, shooting and teamwork in a manner that is both instructional and fun.
    Campers need to wear shorts, a t-shirt, tennis shoes and bring their enthusiasm and a positive attitude. All participants will receive a camp t-shirt and opportunities to win awards in various skill-level competitions.

SEB hoops camp
    The Southeast Bulloch Youth Boys and Girls basketball camp for rising 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders will be held June 2-5. BA Cheerleading Camp
    Bulloch Academy cheerleading coaches Kem Dennard and Kim Burnette invite local and area girls going into grades K5-fifth to sign up for the 2008 Gator Cheerleading Camp.
    The annual camp, conducted by coach Dennard, coach Burnette and members of BA’s GISA Class AA state champion competition cheerleading squad, will be held June 9-12 from 9 a.m.-noon. This opportunity gives young cheerleaders the chance to learn cheers, chants, dances and much more during the fun-filled week.
    Campers need to wear shorts, a t-shirt, tennis shoes and bring their cheerleading spirit. All participants will receive a camp t-shirt.

    Bulloch Academy assistant head football coach Ronnie Hodges invites local and area boys and girls going into grades 2-5 to sign up for the 2008 Gator FUNdamental football day camp.
    The annual camp, conducted by coach Hodges and several present and past BA football players, runs from June 16-19 from 9 a.m. to noon. This instructional opportunity will provide campers with basic football fundamentals in a relaxed, fun-filled environment.
    Your child will participate in groups of his/her own age and ability levels. Coach Hodges anticipates several special guests during the event. Campers will receive a camp t-shirt and opportunities to win awards in various skill-level competitions.

BA Wrestling Camp
    Bulloch Academy head wrestling coach Andy Tomlin and assistant coach Travers Xanthos invite local and area boys, aged seven to 14, to sign up for the 2008 Gator wrestling day camp.
    The first-ever wrestling camp, conducted by coach Tomlin, coach Travers and several present and past BA wrestlers, runs from July 7-10 from 9 a.m. to noon. Tomlin and Travers are former Team Georgia wrestlers with NHSCA All-American honors. This instructional opportunity will provide campers with basic wrestling fundamentals in a positive and fun atmosphere. Wrestling, according to Tomlin,
helps improve strength, cardio fitness, quickness, motivation, self confidence and motivation.
    Campers will receive a camp t-shirt, a daily light snack and a certificate of completion of the camp.
