For Lady Gamecock seniors Kadedra Evans, Ashley Loundy, Kiki Warren and Shaneka Lee, tonight’s game against visiting Southeast Bulloch symbolizes the beginning to reach their goal of a state championship.
The four seniors have been playing basketball together for a long time, and when they arrived at SCHS as freshmen, the team they saw was in a state of disarray.
“Before they got here,” said Lady Gamecock coach Jennifer Acree, “SCHS had gone through four straight losing seasons. The first thing they told me the night we met was, ‘Coach Acree, we want to win state’”.
The 2006-07 season marks the third consecutive 20-win-season for the Lady Gamecocks and before Acree — who happened to arrive as coach for SCHS when Evans, Loundy, Warren and Lee were freshmen — the team had never achieved the 20 win landmark.
All of the hard work put in by the Lady Gamecocks culminated last season when the girls made it all the way to the 3-AAA state championship, only to fall short. This time around, the four seniors are taking a “been there, done-that” approach which they hope will take them all the way to the top.
“I am more excited (this year) then I was last year (going into the playoffs),” said Lee — who is also back-to-back state high jump champion, “I know what to expect. Because I’m a senior, I know what will come out of this.”
Kadedra Evans — who is only five rebounds away from 1,000 and has put up over 1,300 points in her four year career — leads the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. Loundy and Lee run the offense, combining for ___ assists, and Warren takes care of the outside shooting, leading the team in both three point attempts and three pointers made. Warren is also second on the team in rebounds, pulling in ___ boards per game. Loundy leads the team in free throw percentage, knocking down ___percent from the line.
The seniors all contribute to the success of the Gamecocks in their own ways, and this season, they are more prepared than ever.
“We’ve been working harder,” said Acree. “We lift weights three times a week. I definitely think people know that we’re a whole lot stronger. We’re a little bit wiser than we were last year. We know how to get there and we know to act when we get there. I think once we get there, we will be able to fill in the gaps that were missing last year.”
Coach Acree and her four seniors have come a long way these past four years. They have one more chance in the regular season to show what they’ve got — in the final game against SEB tonight.
All of the Lady Gamecocks have worked hard this year, and coach Acree wants to continue building Screven County into a basketball power, but for the four seniors, now is their chance to finish what they started.
