The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets limp into this week’s homecoming matchup with Jenkins on the heels of a tough 21-13 loss to Windsor Forest that dropped them to 1-2 in region play, in a game in which their offense struggled to move the ball and only had one trip to the end zone.
“We didn’t do the things we needed to do in order to put ourselves in a spot to take the lead or really be in the ballgame,” said Southeast Bulloch coach Barrett Davis. “We gave up too many explosive plays on defense, and struggled on offense.”
The Yellow Jacket defense held the Knights in check for most of the night, but gave up a couple of big plays that led to Windsor Forest touchdowns.
“We played pretty well on defense, but a couple of plays just killed us,” Davis said. “At the end of the game we feel like our offense finally got going. We need to be more consistent on that side of the ball.”
This week the Jackets know they will have their hands full, as Jenkins may be the most talented team in their region. The 5-1 Warriors are currently ranked 7th in the state and have outscored the rest of the region 168-15 and are a perfect 4-0, including a 30-0 win over Windsor Forest two weeks ago, and a 20-7 win over Islands last Friday.
“Jenkins is solid in every aspect of the game,” Davis said. They have really beaten up all the team so far in our region. I feel like if we can put the missing pieces together this Friday and have a good game plan we have a chance to beat Jenkins Friday.”
Jenkins is led by junior running back Damozzio Harris, who has 732 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. Junior quarterback Patrick Blake is no slouch himself, as he has thrown for 840 yards and 12 scores himself.
The Jackets will also take a bit of momentum into Friday's matchup as a GHSA ruling earlier this week determined that Islands — which defeated SEB in its region opener — had to forfeit five of its games. The reversal of that game's result upped SEB's region mark to 2-1 and now has the team right back in contention to earn a spot in the state playoffs.
The Yellow Jackets and Warriors are scheduled for a 7:30 kickoff Friday in Brooklet.
