Four hours before being officially introduced as Georgia Southern’s new head football coach, Chris Hatcher made the rounds at Snooky’s Restaurant in Statesboro.

After an early morning breakfast, Hatcher took a lap around the popular establishment, shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries with locals while Snooky’s owner Bruce Yawn introduced him as Georgia Southern’s new leader.

Next on the schedule for Hatcher was a team meeting to introduce himself to his players before an 11 a.m. press conference at the Bishop Field House.

Yawn said Hatcher planned the visit to the eatery on his own and Yawn was thrilled to be one of the first to welcome him.

“I could tell in a 15 minute conversation that he is one of us,” Yawn said. “We were glad to have him here this morning.”

            Customers shared Yawn’s sentiments.

“I think it’s great,” said Statesboro resident Gerald Howard. “In a town like Statesboro, if you don’t make an effort to meet key people like Bruce Yawn, then you’ve lost half the battle.”

Snooky’s was a frequent morning hangout for late Georgia Southern coaching icon Erk Russell.

“Erk was in here all the time connecting with people, so Coach Hatcher has already made a good start,” said Statesboro native Loron Toole.
