The Lady Eagles remember it all too well.
Playing in its third game of the season, Georgia Southern owned a one-point halftime lead over Troy in the opening round of the Image Depot Shootout in Tampa, Fla. But before the Eagles knew it, the Trojans unleashed a 27-10 run and outscored GSU 46-30 in the second half in route to a 77-62 win.
The Eagles (5-6) will have a shot at avenging that loss tonight when the Trojans (7-4) visit Statesboro for a 7 p.m. rematch.
“You want to finish it,” GSU coach Rusty Cram said. “At halftime it was a one-point game, and you are always trying to finish both halves.”
Cram has been working the Eagles hard in practice this week after a lackluster effort in their Southern Conference opener Saturday resulted in a 54-53 loss to the College of Charleston. Along will ball movement, being ready to play is the main thing Cram has harped on during workouts. The team, he said, has responded well.
“We’ve gotten refocused, and the kids are back positive,” he said. “We are past it. They’ve done a good job in practice, and we’ve had two or three of our better ones.”
With campus deserted for the holidays and no class work to worry about, the team doesn’t have too many distractions, which can be a “double-edged razor,” Cram said.
“There’s a lot of dead time, so we’ve got to keep them focused,” he said. “But it can also be easier to get their attention.”
Winners of four of their last five, the Eagles are paced by junior guard Tiffany Brown (12.2) and sophomore guard Ashley Rivens (10.1).
Troy is coming of a 63-58 home loss to Sun Belt Conference foe Florida International Sunday. The Trojans are led by junior guard Amy Lewis’ 17.9 points per game, while sophomore guard Kylie Morissy (13.6) and sophomore forward Danielle Realph (10.3) also average in double figures.
Notes: Georgia Southern fans are encouraged to don their favorite Christmas attire to the game as Hanner Fieldhouse will be decorated for the upcoming holiday. …With fall semester grades recently submitted, Cram was pleased his team cleared the academic hurdle, turning in a team GPA just shy of a 3.0, he said. Grades plagued the Eagles at this time last year when two of their top players failed to qualify academically.
