BOONE, N.C. – The Georgia Southern women’s basketball team is looking to conclude the three-game, five-day road trip to the state of North Carolina with a pair of victories as it faces Appalachian State today at 4:30 p.m.
The Lady Eagles (10-16, 5-10) are riding the momentum of a big upset win over league-leading Western Carolina on Monday. GSU defeated the Catamounts in overtime, 83-81, breaking a two-game skid while snapping WCU’s 10-game win streak.
Appalachian State (11-15, 5-10) hopes to snap their own four-game losing streak, after recently falling at Wofford on Monday by a 63-52 margin.
The two teams have met 37 times since 1990, with the Lady Eagles commanding a 25-12 advantage in the all-time series. Before the Mountaineers had won the last three meetings between the two schools, the last one occurring at Statesboro (Jan. 20) by an 85-68 margin, Georgia Southern held a 14-game win streak over ASU. When playing at Boone’s Holmes Center, Georgia Southern leads the Mountaineers 12-3.
Pacing the way for the Lady Eagles is junior guard Tiffany Brown with 14.4 points, 1.9 steals and 1.6 three-pointers per
contest, including a team-best 30.6 percent from behind the arc.
Classmate forward Chequilla Jessie pulls down a team-best 5.2 rebounds per game, while freshman guard Carolyn Whitney nets 10 points per outing and leads the team in assists
per game (3.2) and free-throw percentage (85.1). Whitney’s free-throw shooting consistently ranks among the best in the nation.
Appalachian State’s Whitney Tossie brings in a team-best 15.3 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.5 steals per game. She is followed by Maria Grimes with 13.2 points per contest, who scored a career-best 33 points versus the Lady Eagles in their first meeting earlier this season on Jan. 20.
