All signs indicated the Lady Eagles snapped out of their recent offensive slump on Saturday, and that’s good news for a young team in the thick of its Southern Conference slate.
In the 71-59 home win over Furman, Georgia Southern shot 42 percent from the field and four players reached double figures to lift the Eagles (6-7, 1-1) to their first league win. They’ll look to make it two in a row when Wofford visits Hanner Fieldhouse for a 5 p.m. game today.
The Terriers are 6-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference and haven’t played since a 94-81 loss at Clemson on Dec. 22. Wofford has been one of the SoCon’s worst teams in recent years but opened this season with a 5-2 mark, its best start since 2001-02. Junior Kelsi Koenig (12.7) and sophomore Liz Miller (10.3) lead the Terriers in scoring, while senior Jenny Weurding has blocked a league-high 30 shots this season.
Georgia Southern went with a four-guard lineup Saturday, adding junior Shawnda Atwood to the mix. The switch helped the Eagles capitalize on their team speed, forcing Furman to cough up the ball 22 times.
“It’s good being back in the starting lineup,” Atwood said. “I don’t know how long it’s going to last. We’ll see.”
Eleventh-year GSU coach Rusty Cram is three victories shy of becoming the program’s winningest coach.

An NAIA opponent is probably a welcomed sight for the Georgia Southern men, who host Pikeville College – Eagle coach Jeff Price’s alma mater – at 7:30 tonight.
The Eagles (6-6) were still dragging from the Christmas break in a 21-point home loss to UNC Greensboro Saturday, an abysmal outing in which GSU was held without a field goal for more than 14 minutes in the second half.
“It’s an important game because we need to work on things,” Price said. “We need to play well.”
The Bears improved to 8-8 on the year with a home victory over the University of Virginia-Wise Saturday, their fifth straight win and eighth in their last 10 games. Under first-year coach Kelly Wells, Pikeville opened the season with six consecutive losses.
“It’s special anytime you play your alma mater,” Price said. “If we are going to have to play a non-Division I team, I want to play a place where I went to school. It’ll be great to have them here. Hopefully, we’ll play well.”
