It’s been a rough week for Georgia Southern football.
The Eagles had another run-in with the law Wednesday night when senior receiver Marquice Maynard was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication. Maynard, 22, is the fifth GSU football player arrested in the last week.
First-year Georgia Southern coach Chris Hatcher said Maynard wouldn’t participate in any team activities until police complete their investigation.
“When they conclude their investigation I will act swiftly and decisively on an appropriate course of action,” Hatcher said in a statement through GSU spokesman Pat Osterman.
According to Bulloch County Chief Deputy Gene McDaniel, Maynard and a friend arrived at The Country Store on Cypress Lake Road around 10 p.m. Wednesday. While the friend remained in the car, Maynard entered the store and attempted to open the cash register.
He fled the scene without any money, and the store clerk immediately contacted the sheriff’s office. A deputy arrived and used surveillance photos to track the vehicle to Countryside Estates, a nearby apartment complex where Maynard is listed as living. Maynard was located, arrested and taken to the Bulloch County jail where he was initially charged with criminal trespass, criminal attempt at theft by taking and public intoxication. After further investigation, the first two charges were reduced to disorderly conduct. Maynard later posted a $3,000 bond and was released.
Maynard’s incident comes on the heels of the arrests of four Eagle freshmen last Friday. Kevin Van Kirk, Ben Granitz and Matt Duke were dismissed from the team Monday after they were connected to car burglaries. Chase DeCarlo was also arrested for attempting to elude police, but Hatcher has yet to address his status with the team.
Maynard, previously a running back, played in all 11 games off the bench in 2006 and gained 47 yards on 13 carries. The 5-foot-8, 170 pound Senoia native (East Coweta High School) is one of the fastest players on the team and started all 12 games at slotback as a sophomore in 2005, gaining 263 yards on 39 attempts. He played in all 12 games as a redshirt freshman in 2004, rushing for 290 yards on 46 carries, and made his first collegiate start in the season opener at the University of Georgia.
