Reports on Sunday indicated that Georgia Southern head football coach Jeff Monken will become the next head coach at the United States Military Academy.
The Army football beat writer for the Times-Herald Record Sal Interdonato wrote in a blog on Sunday that the announcement will come within the week.
“Army is expected to hire Georgia Southern’s Jeff Monken as its next head football coach, sources have confirmed. An official announcement may not be made until after Christmas because it could take time to work out Monken’s contract. Monken would become the academy’s 37th coach,” Interdonato wrote.
No official statements have been made by Army or Georgia Southern.
GSU athletics director Tom Kleinlein said Wednesday that Army requested permission to speak with Monken, who has been the coach for the Eagles since 2010.
Other reports indicated that Army’s decision has not been made.
After reports began surfacing that Monken would become Army’s next head coach, Sports Illustrated senior writer Pete Thamel wrote in a tweet, “Army has not yet made a decision on its next football coach.”
Kleinlein and Monken could not be reached on Sunday.
