GSU, Wofford battle for bye
georgiasouthernlogo

When Charlton Young was hired as head basketball coach at Georgia Southern he talked about playing meaningful games in February.
It’s taken three years, but the moment has arrived. The Eagles will be looking to solidify their hold on second place in the Southern Conference’s South Division, and a first- round SoCon tournament bye that goes with it when they play defending conference champion Wofford at 7 tonight at Hanner Fieldhouse.
GSU (11-12, 9-4) is riding a three-game win streak against the Terriers (15-10, 8-5), who have lost their last two, but own an 88-63 win over GSU earlier this season.
Facts and Figures: It’s “White Out” night and fans are urged to wear white. The first 300 fans will receive a free T-shirt. The Eagles’ largest crowd of the season is 3,025 against College of Charleston.
Notable: Ben Drayton ranks second among active SoCon players with 1,411 career points, three behind Harounta Mutombo of Western Carolina. Jelani Hewitt is averaging 18.3 points per game in his last four games.
    Players to Watch: GSU — 6-7 F Eric Ferguson 15.4 ppg., 7.2 rpg; 5-10 G Ben Drayton 11.8 ppg; 6-2 G Willie Powers 10.8 ppg, 5.5 apg., 6-2 G Jelani Hewitt 10.9 ppg. Wofford — 6-6 G Kevin Giltner 15.2 ppg., 4.3 rpg.; 6-0 G Brad Loesing 14.6 ppg.; 6-1 G Karl Cochran 11.5 ppg., 4.8 rpg.
The Series:  GSU leads, 21-20, but Terriers have won last six.
The Coaches:  GSU — Charlton Young 25-62 3rd season; Wofford — Mike Young 152-149, 10th season.
