CHARLESTON, S.C. — Georgia Southern's men’s basketball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 73-72 overtime victory over The Citadel on Saturday night at McAlister Fieldhouse.
The win takes the Eagles to 11-4 in conference play and 13-12 overall. The win, combined with Davidson’s loss earlier in the day to Charleston, puts Georgia Southern two games behind the Wildcats for first place in the SoCon's South Division.
“We are always happy with wins, but we walk out of tonight’s game with a lot of things to work on,” GSU head coach Charlton Young said. “I told the team that this was a trap game if they didn’t bring the same focus and preparation that they used to dominate Wofford. Unfortunately, we didn’t come out and take control of the game. We put Citadel at the line 26 times and we’ve really got to work on our disciple level and eliminating silly fouls.”
Eric Ferguson scored 14 points to lead the Eagles. Willie Powers scored 13 points with six assists and four steals. Ben Drayton had 13 points and five of the Eagles' 12 steals. The Eagles forced 19 turnovers by The Citadel, including a pair of five-second inbound calls.
GSU's Cameron Baskerville had 10 points and Jelani Hewitt scored nine points to go with a team-high nine rebounds.
The Citadel (4-11, 1-13) was led by Ashton Moore's 24 points. Marshall Harris scored 11 points.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the final 10 seconds and forced overtime for the second time this season between the two teams.
The Bulldogs scored three straight points to open the extra frame with a 72-69 lead with 2:54 remaining, but GSU's Powers drove the lane to cut the lead back to one with two and a half minutes left. After The Citadel missed a shot as the shot clock expired, Powers scored again to give the Eagles a one-point lead. He made a steal at the other end of the floor to give GSU the ball with a minute left.
A foul on GSU's Ferguson with 32 seconds remaining gave the ball back to the Bulldogs. A shot by The Citadel's Moore in the lane went in and out of the basket as the buzzer sounded.
GSU will play UNCG at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Hanner Fieldhouse.
