Luke Gregg reached on an error and scored on an RBI fielder’s choice in the ninth inning as Western Carolina knocked off Georgia Southern 5-4 on Friday at J.I. Clements Stadium.
The Eagles led most of the game, scoring first when a Garrett Chapman leadoff homer sparked a three-run third inning, and GSU (31-20, 13-12 Southern Conference) led 4-0 before the WCU comeback started.
Western (33-14, 17-4) got back three runs, all unearned, in the fourth inning. Reece Strong reached on an error by GSU first baseman Ryan Cleveland, and a pair of one-out hits — a double by Jacob Hoyle and a single Dykota Spiess — cut the Eagles lead to 4-3.
The Catamounts tied the game in the eighth with their only earned run, a home run by Adam Martin off GSU starter Josh Wirsu.
Wirsu pitched 7.1 innings, striking out four and allowing six hits.
Ben Morgan led GSU at the plate with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly RBI in the fifth. Aaron Mizell added an RBI single, and Hunter Thomas doubled and scored.
T.J. Fussell got the win for WCU. He entered the game in the sixth and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing no hits and walking two.
Georgia Southern reliever Jason Richman (5-1) was on the mound when the winning run scored.  He allowed two hits and struck out two.
Despite only allowing one unearned run, Richman took his first loss of the season. Richman has allowed only one earned run across his last 20 appearances and 32.1 innings pitched.
The series resumes today at 4 p.m.
Sam Howard will get the start for the Eagles in a game which is starting late due to GSU’s graduation ceremonies.
