ATLANTA — Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey said Monday that he interviewed with the Miami Dolphins and was waiting to hear if he was still a candidate to replace Nick Saban.
Gailey, a former Dolphins offensive coordinator, is on a long list of potential candidates that also includes former Atlanta Falcons coach Jim Mora.
‘‘There’s nothing new,’’ said Gailey, who was on hand as star receiver Calvin Johnson announced he would enter the NFL draft. ‘‘I’m one of the guys in the running.’’
The Dolphins received permission last week to speak with the 55-year-old Gailey after Saban returned to the college ranks last week, giving up the final three years of a contract that paid him $4.5 million annually to take the head coaching job at Alabama.
Gailey is coming off his best year with Yellow Jackets, who went 9-5 and had the top record (7-1) in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
But Georgia Tech closed the season with a three-game losing streak, which included a sixth straight loss to rival Georgia and a 9-6 setback to Wake Forest in the ACC championship game. The Yellow Jackets finished with a 38-35 loss to West Virginia in the Gator Bowl.
Gailey has a record of 37-26 in five years at Georgia Tech. He just completed the first season of a five-year, $5 million contract extension that ties him to the Yellow Jackets through 2010.
‘‘We’ll see where it goes,’’ he said.
Gailey was head coach of the Dallas Cowboys for two seasons in the late 1990s, leading the team to an NFC East title and two straight playoff appearances before he was fired by owner Jerry Jones.
Gailey, who also worked on Bill Cowher’s staff with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator when Georgia Tech picked him to replace George O’Leary in 2001.
