Eagles take regular season finale over Panthers
GSU New

DECATUR — Georgia Southern Baseball closed out the 2017 regular season on Saturday with a  13-3 rout of Georgia State. The Eagles did not trail on Saturday to avoid the sweep. Seth Shuman worked five innings to improve to 7-0 on the season while Logan Baldwin and Ryan Cleveland each had three hits and two RBIs each.
The Eagles (36-20, 18-12 Sun Belt) had swung that bats well in the first two games of the series, but had failed to keep Georgia State (22-32, 10-20) off of the scoreboard late, resulting in a pair of losses.
Georgia Southern improved in both ends of the game in the series finale, plating four runs in the first inning, continuing to add to its lead throughout the afternoon, and getting a solid pitching effort to take another possible Panther comback out of the mix.
The Eagles started the day with some good fortune, getting Steven Curry and Tyler Martin on base via a hit by pitch and a walk, respectively, from Georgia State starter Devin Vainer, who recorded just one out while allowing two hits, a pair of walks, the hit-by-pitch and getting tagged for all of the Eagles' damage in the first inning.
Ryan Cleveland got the scoring started with an RBI single, Martin scored on a wild pitch and Mason McWhorter doubled to right center for a 4-0 lead before the Panthers saw a pitch to swing at.
Seth Shuman allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, but was otherwise the same dominant starter he has been throughout his freshman season.
Shuman danced around seven hits and struck out four, running his record to a still-perfect 6-0 and notching his sixth win in seven starts.
Martin added an RBI single in the second inning and the Eagles began to stretch out their lead in the fourth.
A double by Logan Baldwin off of Panther reliever Bryan White put runners at first and second with one out before Martin recorded another RBI single. Cleveland notched his second run-scoring hit and Jordan Wren lofted a sacrifice fly to make it an 8-2 game.
Still holding an 8-3 lead in the eighth inning, Baldwin singled to drive in C.J. Brazil and a wild pitch by Tyler Wlwer brought Curry racing home for another Georgia Southern run.
The Eagles took out some more of their frustration from the first two games of the series, adding three more runs in the final frame. Evan McDonald laced a two-run single to right field and Baldwin joined Martin and Cleveland with his second RBI hit of the afternoon.
Shuman worked his way through five innings on the mound to earn the win. Following his departure, the Eagle bullpen that had taken some lumps earlier in the series got a measure of revenge.
Brian Eichhorn and Connor Simmons allowed a hit and recorded a strikeout while pitching through the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.
Ryan Frederick pitched a perfect eighth inning and Anthony Paesano retired the first two Georgia State batters in the bottom of the ninth before Colt Ramsey entered the game, striking out Darius Sewell for the final out of the game.
Next up for the Eagles is the Sun Belt tournament in Statesboro. The Eagles have the No. 5 seed and will face fourth-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
