Both the Gator and Lady Gator basketball teams notched their 10th wins of the season Friday night as Bulloch Academy swept Region 2-AA foe Memorial Day School.
But it wasn’t easy as easy for the girls as it was for the guys.
Although Bulloch held a 10-point halftime lead, Memorial (3-13 overall and 1-2 in region play) mounted a frantic late fourth-quarter rally which turned the contest into a 46-43 fist-clencher. Dominique Washington scored 19 of her game-high 21 points in the final half, 13 in the last eight minutes, as Bulloch held on for the victory.
On a night when members of the BA student section decked out in 1970s’ fashions, the Lady Gators (10-7, 3-1) took an 11-7 lead after the first quarter. But the game turned BA’s way quickly midway through the second quarter.
MDS head coach Gary Zetrouer was hit with a technical foul at the 4:50 mark and BA’s Addie Reddick, who was celebrating her 17th birthday, hit a foul shot for a 14-9 lead. Reddick nailed two more free throws 10 seconds later. Then, Zetrouer was whistled for his second technical with 3:59 left and ejected from the game. Reddick canned both free throws to put BA up by eight, 20-12. Bulloch took a 26-16 halftime lead. Reddick had 13 points on the night and was 7-of-10 from the free throw line.
The third quarter was slugglish and very physical but the Lady Matadors trimmed the BA lead to 34-27.
In the fourth, Washington came alive for MDS and took the game into her own hands. She cut the BA lead to four, 43-39, with 2:17 left when she hit two free throws. Bulloch’s Kaylee Lanier, who led Bulloch with 15, matched Washington in the final eight minutes.
Memorial’s Ashlyn Miller hit 1-of-2 from the line with 37.9 seconds left to draw the Lady Matadors to within three, 43-40. But BA senior Abi Foy canned two from the charity stripe with 16.3 seconds left for a five-point lead. Miller had 10 for MDS while Foy added eight for Bulloch.
On the inbounds pass, Washington raced down the court and drilled a three-pointer with under 10 seconds left to make it a 45-43 ballgame. On BA’s inbounds, Reddick was fouled with 5.6 seconds remaining and hit the back end of a two-shot award. Washington got the ensuing inbounds pass, flashed to the Bulloch end of the court but couldn’t get off a shot before the horn sounded.
Bulloch travels to Bellville Tuesday at battle Class AAA Pinewood Christian Academy.
Gators 68, Matadors 54
The Gators’ game ebbed and flowed like the ocean tide as Bulloch (10-5, 3-1) would take a sizeable lead only to watch it disintegrate against a pesky Matador bunch.
Jordan Walker scored nine of his game-high 19 points in the second quarter to help the Gators take a 20-13 lead by the end of the opening quarter. An efficient fast-break and great passing boosted BA’s lead to 16 in the second quarter before Bulloch settled for a 14-point halftime lead, 39-25.
Early in the third, Memorial (8-10, 1-2) took advantage of the Gators’ reckless play and bad shots to shave the lead to seven, 42-35, midway through the quarter.
After some ranting and raving by Gator head coach Chandler Dennard, Bulloch went on a 13-2 run with some dazzling offensive and defensive play to retake a comfortable lead by the end of the quarter. At times, the passes of Gator fastbreak resembled the precision clockwork of New England Patriot quarterback Tom Brady and his receiving corp.
Arne Bencker, who added 11 points on the night, put BA up by 20 points at the 3:21 mark of the fourth when he canned two free throws for a 65-45 lead.
Will Powell and Taylor Burke added nine each for the Gators and Zach Altany had eight. Colin Plummer led the Matadors with 14, Monterio Warren had nine and Daniel Hancock added eight.
Bulloch 42, Memorial 33 (B-Team boys)
Bulloch made it a clean sweep of the Memorial basketball program with an early victory by the boys’ sub-varsity squad.
Altany netted 15 points, including three three-pointers, and Ellis Lane added 12 in the win. The freshmen combined to hit 10-of-11 free throws. The BA B-team improved to 5-3.
