The Reverend David E. Hudson
PORTAL, Ga. -- The Rev. David E. Hudson, age 85, passed away at his home on Friday, August 3, 2018. He was born on February 20, 1933, in Grady County, Georgia, to John and Estelle Hudson. He had seven sisters and four brothers and was reared on a farm in Southwest Georgia.
    David attended the public schools of Whigham, Georgia, and graduated from Whigham High School. He then went on to receive an associate of art degree from Andrew College, Cuthbert, Georgia; a Bachelor of Arts degree from Valdosta College, Valdosta, Georgia; and a master of divinity degree from Candler School of Theology, Emory University.
    David was a dedicated servant of the Lord and began serving in the Methodist ministry in 1951 at Whigham United Methodist Church and served as a student pastor at Mystic Charge (1954-55) and Leila Weeks Chapel (1955-1956). His first appointment as a full-time pastor was in Portal, where he served from 1956–1962. David spent his entire career serving churches in the South Georgia Conference.
    He retired in 1995, but then came back to serve at Portal and Payne’s Chapel.
    David will be remembered by his family, many friends and parishioners as a strong family man who loved and cared for others and his Lord.
    David was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Penny Hudson.
    Left to honor David and remember his love are three children, Julie H. Blackmar, Mark Hudson and Paul Hudson; three grandchildren, Sam Blackmar, Hampton Hudson and Katelyn Hudson.
    The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
    The funeral service will be Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Cason officiating, assisted by the Rev. Myra Barrett. A private graveside service and burial will be in the Portal City Cemetery.
    Pallbearers will be Hampton Hudson, Samuel Blackmar, Chris Archambeault, Christopher Archambeault, Anthony Waters and Hub Powell.
    The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Portal United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 401, Portal, Georgia 30450-5279.
