NEWINGTON, Ga. — It is with great sadness that the family of John Shadrick Hilten announce his passing on Sunday, December 23, 2018, at the age of 88 years.
John will be remembered lovingly by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Tuttle Hilten; his daughter, Claudia Lee Durheim; and his son, John (wife, Kimmie) Shadrick Hilten Jr. John will moreover be fondly remembered by his five grandchildren, Austin Tyler Hilten, Jonathan Parker Hilten, Alexander Kent Hilten, John “Jack” Shadrick Durheim and Hannah Rachel Durheim.
John was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on January 23, 1930, and was raised in Wytheville, Virginia. He attended Emory & Henry College and received a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He was for the majority of his career a scientist for the National Bureau of Standards, conducting work for NASA, the United States Army and others, and later a professor of aerospace engineering at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
