A woman was shot in the hand early Sunday morning after gunfire erupted during an "impromptu" gathering at a Lanier Drive convenience store.
Police sought suspects, looking for a car that left the area after the incident, but no arrests were made, according to police radio traffic overheard during the immediate investigation.
Around 1:52 a.m. Sunday, Statesboro police officers responded to Parker's Enzone, which has become a spot where people tend to gather after area bars and restaurants close, said Statesboro police Deputy Chief Rob Bryan.
Statesboro police Chief Mike Broadhead issued a statement Monday, saying officers responded to the scene after a call came in that a woman had been shot in the "hand and wrist area."
He said "a large, impromptu crowd gathered at the location after some of the late night businesses closed." A physical fight started in the parking lot, and "during the altercation, shots were fired."
The victim was taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, where she was treated for her wound and released, he said.
Statesboro police Senior Detective Travis Kreun is leading the investigation. Police have not stated whether they have identified a suspect, and "no further information is being released at this time," Broadhead said.
Anyone with information concerning this case is asked to contact the Statesboro Police Department at (912) 764-9911.
