Parents of four-year-olds will have more choices next fall thanks to the state education department awarding Southeast Bulloch High School and Mattie Lively Elementary School lottery-funded prekindergarten classes.
This brings the total of prekindergarten classes in the county to 13, said Dr. Marilyn Dryden, director of early care and learning for Bulloch County Schools.
"We're collaborating with the early childhood education classes on campus at Southeast Bulloch High School, and students will have a clinical place to work with kids," she said.
Southeast Bulloch High School Principal Joni Walker Seier said she is extremely excited about the new prekindergarten classes.
"We had the foresight (in building the new SEB high school) that we already have the facility for the pre-K," she said. "We have early childhood classes and there is two-way glass where (high school) students can observe the children."
First-year early childhood education students will only observe the preschool children. Second-year and third-year early childhood education students will interact with the younger children, she said.
"We're very excited,"  she said. "This will help parents, and it is very important to have that early start in school. We're very excited to be a service to the community  - this will definitely meet a public and community need."
Mattie Lively Elementary School Principal Kevin Judy said he is excited about adding prekindergarten to his school. "It will add another positive aspect to our school," he said.
Each new prekindergarten class will be filled by a lottery, Dryden said. Applications for the Southeast Bulloch High School prekindergarten classes can be picked up either at the school or the Bulloch County Schools Central Office between June 12-18. The applications can be returned to either the school or the Central Office.
Mattie Lively prekindergarten applications are available at the Bulloch County Schools Central Office between June 12-18. Applications can be returned to the Central Office.
The drawing for the Southeast Bulloch High School prekindergarten classes will be held at the school June 19 at 5 p.m. at the school, Dryden said.
The drawing for Mattie Lively openings will be June 23 at 5 p.m. at the school, she said.
This brings the total of Bulloch County prekindergarten programs to 13, she said. Sallie Zetterower is the only elementary school that does not currently have a prekindergarten program, she said.
