A store clerk was robbed at gunpoint Saturday as she was leaving work, said Statesboro police Capt. Jared Akins.

The Dollar General store clerk was outside the East Main Street business around 10:15 p.m. Saturday when an unknown black man, wearing all black, showed a gun and demanded “personal belongings,” he said. “The suspect then ran toward Deerwood Apartments directly across the street.”

Multiple patrol officers set up in the area, and Advanced Patrol Officer Patrick Webb and his K9 partner Smokey arrived to assist in the hunt for the suspect.

“Smokey was able to track the suspect’s scent into the Deerwood Apartments, and (officers) were able to recover some of the victim’s property discarded in the area by the suspect during his flight,” Akins said.

The suspect, however, could not be located and may have fled in a vehicle from the area, he said.

No one was injured in the armed robbery.
