Statesboro's 50501 protest
50501 protest
For the fifth time on a Saturday this year, local people gathered on the Bulloch County Courthouse square again last Saturday, April 19, to protest actions and policies of President Donald Trump and his administration. This latest gathering was held in association with a national 50501 Movement for peaceful protest under the slogan "50 protests, 50 states, 1 movement," with a stated aim "to uphold the Constitution and end executive overreach." About 60 to 70 people were present during the noon hour. (AL HACKLE/staff)

For the fifth time on a Saturday this year, local people gathered on the Bulloch County Courthouse square again last Saturday, April 19, to protest actions and policies of President Donald Trump and his administration. One retired teacher carried a sign honoring immigrants she knows, including her grandson, a neighbor, friends, her therapist and renters. While the American flag was carried by those asserting a need to reclaim our country, one man — an economics professor who once lived in Russia — carried the flag of Ukraine to seek continued U.S. support for that nation in its struggle against Russian invaders. This latest gathering was held in association with a national 50501 Movement for peaceful protest under the slogan "50 protests, 50 states, 1 movement," with a stated aim "to uphold the Constitution and end executive overreach." About 60 to 70 people were present during the noon hour, so attendance was down from the "Hands Off" event on April 5 that drew about 150, but organizers said there will be more demonstrations yet.
