The following are among the food service establishments inspected in August by the Bulloch County Health Department. The department scores on a 100-percentile scale. Kitchens are inspected at least every four months and are required to post their score sheets in public. The score and selected comments from health inspectors are included in each report. All eating establishments are located in Statesboro, except where noted. To view all restaurant scores, visit and select Bulloch County.

Aug. 2

➤ Chili's, 435 Commerce Drive 

▲ Score: 74

Rotten onion in storage area discarded; corrected on-site. Uncovered bell peppers in walk-in cooler. Corrected on-site.  Need thermometers inside all coolers/freezers. Wet cloth on prep top cutting board; should be stored in sanitizer in between uses. To-go boxes in back storage room not in plastic sleeves. Food debris on floor in walk-in freezer. Food debris on floor on cook line. Grease/debris accumulation on/between/behind equipment on line. Clean areas thoroughly. Observed several flies throughout the kitchen. Inspector: Rebecca Clifton.

A lot of food needs to be properly labeled and date-marked. Observed containers being used for food items that are original containers for a different food item/type. Cutting boards are badly severed and need to be replaced to prevent bacteria food contamination. Inspector: LaRon Randall.

Observed a fly within the cold-holding area laying/resting on sliced turkey sandwich meat. Corrected on-site; meat was discarded immediately. Observed chili and BBQ sauce within cold-holding/fridge past 7-day period of being prepped. Corrected on-site. Observed badly severed cutting board that needs to be replaced to prevent contamination of food from bacteria. Observed an abundance of flies throughout the entire kitchen. Inspector: Randall.

Observed molded butter in prep cooler. Corrected on-site; food discarded. Observed organic matter build-up on soda nozzles behind bar. Clean food contact surfaces. Inspector will return within 72 hours. Observed salad dressings, butter and syrup past manufacturer-marked date. Observed bottle pours stored in hand sink. Observed sponge stored in hand sink. Observed build-up of grease on vent hood. Inspector: Laura Moore.

Observed hand sink not supplied with paper towels for hand-drying. Observed seal on cooler at servers' bar not intact. Observed grease and food debris in the bottom of small oven. Inspector: Moore.

Observed shrimp and shrimp sauce in cooler without proper date-marking and time stamp. Observed debris in the bottom of walk-in freezer. Inspector: Moore.

➤ Vera's Kitchen and Catering, 2390 Northside Drive West

Observed hand-washing sink without soap. Observed a rotten tomato in the fridge; was discarded immediately. Dishwasher wasn't properly sanitizing the dishes. The 3-compartment sink is being utilized until follow-up. Observed pink organic matter in ice machine. Clean thoroughly. Observed dirty utensils stored with clean utensils. Observed foods that have been opened and unboxed that need to be properly labeled with common name and properly dated with 7-day period. Observed spoiled milk in fridge. Corrected on-site; milk was discarded immediately. Clean hoods and fryer of grease encrustation. Inspector: Randall.

Reinspection score: 89 (Aug. 12)

Observed ribs and rice in hot-hold not reaching the proper temperatures. Corrected on-site; told certified food safety manager how to properly heat food to store in hot-hold. Observed wet-stacking. Observed trash bin under hand-washing sink without trash bag. Inspector: Randall.

Observed wet-stacking of dishes. Space dishes out to properly dry. Observed food debris in bottom of fridge. Clean and wipe thoroughly. Observed personal orange juice bottle in cooler with restaurant food items. Flies in kitchen. Inspector: Randall.

Observed hand sink not properly supplied with hand soap. Corrected on-site; soap was placed at hand sink. Observed organic matter in soda dispenser and ice dispenser. Clean food contact surface. Observed opened chicken outside of original container not labeled with common name or date-marking. Observed sauces in fridge without proper labels. Observed walk-in cooler missing thermometers. Observed mop sitting in dirty water and not being hung to dry. Missing test strips, damaged test strips noted. Observed multiple on-food contact surfaces that needed to be cleaned. Walk-in cooler, fryers, fridge, hot-hold. Flies in kitchen. Inspector: Randall.

Observed food items missing common name labels and markings. Observed condensation dripping from ceiling vent. Spoke with maintenance to fix. Inspector: Randall.

Observed a hand-washing sink blocked with clothes. Observed dirty drink nozzles. Observed a cold-holding unit to be out and not functioning properly. All foods were discarded immediately. Observed utensils being kept in stagnant water. Observed wet-stacking of dishes. Observed dirty prep cutting boards. Need to wipe and sanitize after use. Also needs replacement. Observed flies in kitchen area. Inspector: Randall.

Aug. 12

➤ Chow Time, 408 Northside Drive Suite 8

Hand-washing sink blocked by a cart. Corrected on-site; path to hand-washing sink was immediately cleared. Rotten tomato and potato in walk-in cooler. Items were discarded immediately. Uncovered foods all throughout kitchen/fridges/Coolers. Observed black organic build-up in ice machine. Observed sushi, imitation crab and other food items out-of-temp in the proper cold-holding. Observed many food items missing date-marking labels. Common name missing on food items taken out of original container. Observed many utensils sitting in stagnant water; corrected on-site. Observed pipe under hand-washing sink leaking/spilling directly on floor and not into the drain. Observed flies throughout kitchen. Inspector: Randall.

Observed potentially-hazardous foods on prep bar not stored covered. Cover all foods when not in use. Observed organic matter build-up on soda fountain nozzles in drive thru. Clean food-contact surfaces. Observed cheese and sliced tomatoes in prep bar without proper time marking/discard time. Corrected on-site; because food was at 41 degrees F, time stamp was placed on food container. Inspector: Moore.
