The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region Five office is investigating a fatal shooting involving a Bulloch County Sheriff's deputy that occurred Monday night on Highway 80 East and Highway 119 near the Bryan County line.
A man is dead after reportedly resisting arrest when one Bulloch and two Effingham County Sheriffs deputies tried to serve a bench warrant, according to Savannah TV station WTOC.
The Statesboro Herald reported the shooting around 11:30 p.m. Monday. Bulloch County Sheriff's Capt. Todd Hutchens told the Herald early Tuesday morning the GBI would handle the investigation and said all law enforcement officers involved were not injured.
WTOC reported the suspect fled his home with a long gun and allegedly pointed the firearm at deputies. All three deputies reportedly returned fire at the suspect. The suspect, who was described as a 52-year-old man, later died from his wounds.
The Statesboro Herald is following the incident and will report additional details as they are available. Further information is expected from GBI agents later today.
