Statesboro police investigators are searching for the killer of an unidentified man shot early Wednesday morning at Campus Crossings Apartments, located on Lanier Drive near the Georgia Southern University campus.

"We have (the victim) at the (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) crime lab in Savannah, and right now we are listing him as ‘John Doe,'" said Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch. "Statesboro police are working on trying to find out" the man's identity.

Statesboro police Deputy Chief Rob Bryan said in a statement released Wednesday morning that the death was ruled a homicide.

Just before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers "were patrolling the area of Lanier Drive when they heard and responded to the sounds of gunshots in the area of Campus Crossings," he said. "When officers arrived, they located a subject with a gunshot wound and began to render aid and investigate."

Bulloch County Emergency Medical Service was called to the scene, and the victim was transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center for treatment. While at East Georgia, the man died from the injury, Bryan said.
No further details about the death were available, as police detectives continue the investigation.

Bulloch County Sheriff's Office deputies and Georgia Southern University Police Department officers also responded to the area to assist, Bryan said.
