Police: 3 local armed robberies not likely related

Statesboro Police don’t think three armed robbery incidents this week are related, but warn citizens that the holiday season also brings the crime season, with an increase in robberies, burglaries and other crimes.
Three Georgia Southern University-area apartment complexes were the sites of incidents involving reports of guns, unknown assailants and property stolen, according to Statesboro Police reports.
Earlier this week a woman told police four unknown men knocked on her Campus Crossing apartment door and forced their way inside after she answered. She yelled at them to get out, but when  they finally did, they left with her wallet, she said.
In another incident, a man told police he and a friend were in a parked car at Stadium Walk Apartments when two unknown men, brandishing guns, approached them.
According to what one victim said in reports, the two gunmen struck the  victims with the guns and grabbed a book bag that held a lap top computer and text book.
However, according to reports, the complainant’s friend refused to cooperate with police and the incident remains under investigation.
“We’re still looking into (the incidents) at this point,” said Statesboro Police Det. Sgt. James Winskey. “We don’t  think the incidents are related at this point.”
A third armed robbery was reported this week as well, but descriptions of suspects do not match any suspects in the other cases, he said.
A man told police an unknown man and woman entered his Eagle Walk apartment, waved a gun and took an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was  injured in any of  the incidents, reports stated.
Winskey said people should be vigilant at all times, but during the holidays and especially with  the depressed economy, crimes such as theft by sudden snatching, armed robberies and burglaries will likely increase.
He recommended making sure doors are locked, including vehicle doors, and suggested leaving valuables out of sight if  they must be kept in the vehicle.
Also, “you need to see who’s there before opening the door,” if possible, he said.
“This is the time of year people are looking for Christmas presents,” he warned. “Make sure they don’t get yours.”
