A Statesboro teen remains in critical condition after a stabbing Saturday night. Another teen is behind bars on several charges an more may be pending, police said.

Both juvenile males are 16, said Statesboro Police Capt. L. C. Williams.

Statesboro Police officers responded to a reported stabbing just before midnight Saturday at Madison Meadows Apartments on Packinghouse Road, he said.

Witnesses told officers the two were arguing when one stabbed the other. Williams said the offender used a knife with a blade "about six to eight inches" long and stabbed the victim in the back. "It was a pretty big ... knife."

The offender fled on foot after the stabbing, witnesses said. Officers located a group of teens on Packinghouse Road and took them to the Statesboro Police Department for questioning, he said.

Statesboro Det., Keith Holloway responded to the scene and began an investigation which soon led to the arrest of the 16-year-old offender, Williams said.

The victim was first taken by Bulloch County Emergency Medical service to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, but was later transported to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta for further treatment, he said.

Williams said Monday the victim "remains in critical condition but seems to have improved slightly."

The feud between the two possibly began over one teen "saying something" about the other,  he said. The suspected offender has a history of past gang involvement and the incident could possibly be gang-related, he said.

The offender is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime, first degree cruelty to children, and participation in a criminal street gang, Williams said.

The case remains under investigation and "other charges could be made," he said.

"Anyone with information (regarding the stabbing) is asked to contact Det. Keith Holloway with the Statesboro Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division at (912) 764-1542," he said. "Information that is provided will be held with strict confidence."
