A Register man is behind bars without bond after he assaulted a woman and  tried to rape her, authorities said.
Larry Lee Hill Jr., 28, Kennedy Bridge Road, Register, picked up a former high school acquaintance in Statesboro Saturday and took her to an abandoned house on Furman Road, off Coley Boyd Road, on the pretense that they would “hang out and drink beer,” said Bulloch County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Capt. Todd Hutchens.
Once there, Hill assaulted the woman, using a knife, he said. He then tried to rape the victim,  but “she fought free and escaped ... and convinced him to release her,” he said.
Hutchens did not disclose details about the assault, but Hill is charged with aggravated sodomy, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime, false imprisonment,  and aggravated assault with intent to rape, according to jail records.
After the victim broke free from Hill, “ he came to his senses and took her back to town,” he said.
After learning that law enforcement officers were looking for him, having been to his mother’s home in Register, Hill “ turned himself in to tell his side of the story,” Hutchens said. He was placed under arrest when he came to give his version of the events, which included denial of assaulting  the woman or trying to rape her, he said.
However, “evidence at the crime scene showed differently,” he said.
The incident took about an hour or a little more, he said. The victim was not severely injured, but suffered “minimal superficial injuries,” Hutchens said.
Hill was taken to the Bulloch County Jail where he remains without bond, jail records show. The case has been turned over to Bulloch County Sheriff’s Inv. Jason Long.
