SYLVANIA, Ga. — John Harold Thompson, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Optim Medical Center – Screven in Sylvania.

He was born in Screven County, Ga., to the late Carl William and Carwee Morel Thompson and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He graduated from Screven County High School in 1954 and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He retired as a Master Sergeant from the USAF in 1974 after 20 years of service. He received numerous awards and medals, including the Air Force Commendation Medal First Oak Leaf Cluster and Second Oak Leaf Cluster for Meritorious Service. Some of his deployments included Viet Nam, Japan, Guam, the Philippines and England. 

After returning to Screven County with his family, he was employed with the Torrington Company and Gulfstream Aerospace. He retired from Gulfstream in 1992. 

He was a member of the VFW Post 7116 of Sylvania and enjoyed gardening and fishing. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Claudelle T. McLaughlin, C.W. Thompson Jr., Marjorie T. Smith, Edward Morel Thompson, Lucille T. Sheley and Horace R. Thompson.

Survivors: Loving wife of 59 years, Nancy Morris Thompson of Sylvania; daughters and sons-in-law, Julie Thompson (Ray Williams), Lori T. and Charles Scott, and Vickie T. Lovett (Nick Smith), all of Sylvania; and Marie T. and David Groover of Nevils, Ga.; sister, Betty T. Oliver of Sylvania; grandchildren, Christopher J. Grovenstein (Amanda Bogart) of Sylvania; Craig W. Grovenstein (Angelina) of Statesboro, Ga.; Jessica S. Hall (Daniel) of Sylvania; Kirk G. Scott of Sylvania; Erika D. Lovett (Andrew Reddick) of Savannah, Ga.; Jacob D. Lovett of Sylvania; Hunter M. Groover of Statesboro; and April R. Groover of Statesboro; great-grandchildren, Kerrigan Bogart, Cody Grovenstein, John Daniel Hall, Luke Hall, Caleb Hall and Eli Hall; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Friday, April 13, 2018, at 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home.

Graveside service: Friday, April 13, 2018, at 3:30 p.m. at Screven County Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Chad Wall and the Rev. Jason Wiltse officiating. Burial will follow in Screven County Memorial Cemetery with full military honors.

Pallbearers: Chris Grovenstein, Kirk Scott, Hunter Groover, Jacob Lovett, Robert Lariscy and Daniel Hall.

Honorary pallbearers: Jerry McLaughlin, Tommy McLaughlin, Bobby G. Smith, Jack Oliver Jr., Terry Oliver, LeHue Sheley, William Harris Sheley, Fred Fountain, Don Hall, members of VFW Post 7116 and other special military friends.
