Clara Dean Chumbler

Mrs. Clara Dean Chumbler, age 92, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2018, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice inpatient facility in Statesboro.

She was born on November 28, 1925, in Rickman, Tennessee, Overton County. She graduated from Rickman High School in 1943. She married A.L. Chumbler in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and they were the parents of Jennifer, Renee and Gil Chumbler.

Clara was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, A.L. Chumbler; her parents, Charlie and Lillie Bowman; two sisters, Francis Dew and Joyce Walker; and one brother, Howard Bowman.

She was a loving wife, a homemaker and a caregiver for her handicapped son, Gil, for many years. She was a member of Eagledale Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Grace Baptist Church of Muncie, Indiana, before moving to Statesboro, Georgia, to live near her daughter, Renee, and son-in-law, DeWayne. After moving to Statesboro, she enjoyed going to church at First Baptist Church as long as she was physically able. She loved reading the Bible and made it a habit to go over Scripture verses at night before she went to bed. Her personal ministry was calling and checking on the sick or bereaved and then sending a card of encouragement or sympathy. Clara looked at everything as a blessing from the Lord and loved to pray for the needs of others. She said many times that she was ready to go to heaven whenever the good Lord wanted to take her.

She is survived by her children, Jennifer (Michael) Murray of Carmel, Indiana; Renee (DeWayne) Perkins of Statesboro, Georgia; and Gil Chumbler of Muncie, Indiana; one sister, Jeanette Windle of Livingston, Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Faye Bowman, Chesterfield, Indiana; Betty (Paul) Colvin, Milledgeville, Georgia; and Lena Mae (Elston) Thornton, Athens, Alabama; three grandchildren, Kristin (Jason) Lannen, Ryan Murray and Ashleigh Whelan; three step-grandchildren, Celena (Clay) Gracen, Shaana (Todd) Tinker and Lyn Perkins; and eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews, family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home, followed by a service at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel with Dr. John Waters officiating.

A visitation in Muncie, Indiana, will be held at Meeks Mortuary, Washington Street, on Saturday from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., followed by a service in the chapel of Meeks Mortuary at 2 p.m.

Interment will be at the Bronnenberg Cemetery, Chesterfield, Indiana.

The family wishes to thank The Lodge at Bethany for their love and care of Miss Clara while living in Statesboro and Ogeechee Area Hospice for their wonderful care in her final days.

Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church of Statesboro Mission Fund, 108 N. Main St., Statesboro, GA 30458; or Grace Baptist Church, Muncie, Indiana, Mission Fund, 6401 W. River Road, Muncie, IN 47304.
