National Day of Giving for Red Cross Saturday
Red cross10
This year has been a particular challenge for the American Red Cross. Tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and fires have kept volunteers busy and drained funds.
That’s why  Lynn Bowen, executive director of the Bulloch Chapter of the American Red Cross, hopes a fundraiser Saturday will help replenish the coffers.
As part of  the National Day of Giving, the Red Cross Disaster Services  will partner with Chick-fil-A of  Statesboro in efforts to raise funds to help disaster victims.
“This is a national endeavor for the Red Cross,” Bowen said. “We have had so many disasters in  the past six month period.”  Followed by a spring and summer of tornadoes and hurricanes, the cold snap has brought a different kind of disaster. We have had fire after fire after fire,” she said. “Because of that, funds are diminished.”
The day’s activities Saturday  will be held at Statesboro’s Chik-fil-A on Northside Drive from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.,  with T-shirt sales, donations accepted and a “wheel of fortune” where coupons are given to donors.
NFL Star Fred Stokes, a former Georgia Southern University Eagle, was a victim of the tornadoes that wrought havoc across the region earlier this spring. Stokes, who lost his entire house in a tornado, will be at Chik-fil-A from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to sign autographs and support the effort to raise money for Red Cross, Bowen said.
The American Red Cross will also accept monetary donations by mail from those who wish to give but cannot attend the fundraiser. Checks made out to the American Red Cross can be mailed to 515 Denmark Street, Suite 1000, Statesboro, Ga. 30458.
