Wednesday's first guest on the “Mornings unPHILtered” show was Allen Muldrew, the executive director of the Statesboro Downtown Development Authority.
He came on the show to talk about the upcoming First Friday in downtown Statesboro. The monthly event also will feature the city's “Holiday Celebration.”
Muldrew told host Phil Boyum that Santa would come to the Statesboro Regional Library first and then head up to Statesboro City Hall in the annual holiday parade. People will be able to take pictures of their kids with Santa. There will be snow blown onto the square to put everybody in the holiday mood.
Muldrew also reminded listeners about the annual “Chili Fest” that's part of the celebration, in which some 15 entrants will vie for top honors. In addition, there will be food vendors so that families can get something to eat as they partake of the festivities. There is still time for more parade participants or chili cook-off hopefuls to register.
Muldrew said two entertainment stages will be set up. The first stage will feature Chris Mitchell's School of Rock students, and the second stage will feature the Statesboro Chorale's Vox Novum choir. There will be several other participants Friday evening, including First United Methodist Church's choir, and the Black Nativity group.
Finally, the Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department will offer an ornament making area for kids, with all materials provided and there will be a train for giving kids rides around the square. To find out how to participate, contact the Downtown Development Authority at 764-7227.
The next guest was Tim Chapman, executive director of the Averitt Center for the Arts, who came to talk about upcoming holiday shows and gallery openings. There are four art gallery shows right now at the Averitt, including the annual “Holiday Card Show” in which Elaine Chambers's art was selected for the Averitt's annual Christmas card.
In addition, Connie Crow, who works with oils and watercolors, will be showcased at the Averitt. Finally, the Legends and Youth Galleries will be opening with new shows as well. The Legends Gallery will feature the work of two GSU professors and the Youth Gallery will showcase the work of several local schools.
Shay Morgan will direct the center's annual production of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” The show lasts 35 minutes, which Chapman said is perfect for younger kids. There is a 7 p.m. showing on Friday and 2 pm on Saturday afternoon. Tickets are $5.
The Averitt Stars community theater will premiere their production of “The Man Who Came to Dinner” next week. The show was on Broadway for years, and was made into a movie with Betty Davis in 1942. Performances are scheduled for Dec.11-13 at the Averitt.
Finally, the Averitt will showcase the play “Black Nativity,” written by Langston Hughes.
Originally produced by the National Center of Afro-American Artists, “Black Nativity” is the account of the birth of Christ 2000 years ago, based on the Gospel of Saint Luke. There will be shows at 7:30 p.m. on both Dec. 18 and 19. Call the Averitt at 212-2787 for more information.
