The Portal Heritage Society will host the Lewis and Clark Circus again this year, inviting families to enjoy a taste of the big top during two separate shows on Thursday, March 22.

"The Lewis and Clark Circus is returning for the third year," said Portal Heritage Society President Timothy Cook.

There will be daredevils, exotic animals, a petting zoo, face painting, vendors with novelties for sale, snow cones and other concessions, as well as pony and camel rides and lots of family-oriented fun, he said.

The Lewis and Clark Circus was founded in 2006 and is based in Greenville, South Carolina. It is a "one ring European-style circus under the Big Top featuring continuous action in the center ring," according to the circus' Facebook page. "Families attending the show can expect to see high-flying trapeze artists, high wire artists, amazing acrobats, juggling, clowns, plus much more."

Tickets for adults are $10 in advance and $15 on the day of show, and with each adult ticket sold, two children will be admitted free, Cook said. Additional kids' tickets are $6 each.

Tickets are available for purchase at Lanier's IGA, Pepperjacks Deli and Grill and Portal City Hall. They may also be purchased online at www.lccircus.com or by calling Cook at (912) 655-0582.

The event will be held at the E.C. Carter Turpentine Still site at 217 Turpentine Drive in Portal, where the Portal Heritage Society hosts its annual Catface Country Turpentine Festival each fall.

Cook encouraged not only Portal area residents but also those from surrounding areas to attend a show, which is "a fundraiser for the Portal Heritage Society to restore our historical sites that we own in Portal," he said. Those sites include the old Stewart's Drug Store, the E.C. Carter Turpentine Still and the Stewart House.
