Franklin Waters has been busy all week long, pouring funnel cake batter as fast as it could be fried.
Friday, he was even frying banana slices at the GoldWing Road Riders Association booth at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair.
The smell of frying dough wafted across the breeze as he took a break, proud to talk about the reason he has been working the booth every year for the past nine years.
“We help raise money for the needy families, people who have been burned out and lost everything,” he said. “We collect food and toys for the holidays, and have a toy run with the Department of Family and Children Services.”
Long lines formed at the booth as he poured the batter in a lacy design, to be fried up and covered in powdered sugar.
“I’ve been here every night from 5 to 11 p.m.,” he said.
Helping in the booth for the past nine years has been so rewarding, he plans to do it again next year, and for years after that.
“I’m helping people in need,” he said. “And, I am making something people enjoy.”
Tonight is the last night folks can visit the food vendors at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair. The fairgrounds open at 1 p.m. and close at midnight, with no admissions after 10 p.m.
