A children's fishing rodeo, "Fishing For Heritage," sponsored by the Portal Heritage Society, Inc. will get under way Saturday, Sept. 8, at Margaret Tankersley's pond on U.S. 25 North (look for signs).
Awards will be given to winners in three age groups: 3-6, 7-10, and 11-14. Prizes will be awarded to a boy and a girl in each age group who catches the smallest fish, the largest fish, and the heaviest total weight.
Kids are encouraged to come early to register and be ready to wet their bait when the call "Go Fishing!" is sounded. A parent or guardian must accompany the angler. Registration will be at 8 a.m.; the pond will open at 9:00 a.m., and close at 1:00 p.m.
The cost is $3.00 per angler. Kids will need to bring something to keep the fish cool, such as a cooler with ice, bucket, or fish stringer. Anglers must furnish their own rod/reel or fishing pole, and they will be limited to one rod/pole per angler. The bait must be crickets or worms - no artificial lures allowed.
