The Downtown Statesboro Development Authority will celebrate the start of high school football season with local players, cheerleaders, coaches and bands at the annual Downtown Pep Rally on Friday from 5:30-8 p.m. on the Bulloch County Courthouse lawn.
Fans are invited to cheer for their favorite team in this First Friday event for August.
Statesboro High School, Bulloch Academy, Southeast Bulloch High School and Portal High School are all participating, the DSDA announced. Tommy Palmer with Georgia High School Scoreboard will introduce the teams and interview coaches and players about the upcoming year.
The marching bands will play fight songs, and cheerleaders will do what they do best.
"We think it's a good event to get Bulloch County together and kick off the school year," said Pat Collins, Southeast Bulloch's head football coach.
He said he wants to show appreciation to the school's administration for support of the athletic program and will recognize student-athletes, especially seniors as they go into their final season.
"This annual event provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase our high school football programs," said Allen Muldrew, executive director of the DSDA.
As with other First Friday events, the DSDA invites the public to shop and dine downtown and browse local vendors and fun attractions, featuring funnel cakes and other treats, a bouncy house, a photo booth and giveaways. City of Statesboro Natural Gas is a sponsor and will provide free hotdogs.
