A couple whose home burned Sunday are doing well, but their home and its contents were a total loss, fire officials said.
Around 2 a.m. Sunday, 70-year-old Pauline Keys Raymond and her husband Johnny W. Raymond, 68, were awakened by a smoke alarm, said Statesboro Fire Capt. Emerson Melton. With the flames blocking their way, they used a space heater to break a window and escape, he said. Mr. Raymond suffered a minor cut that required stitches but the couple was otherwise unharmed, he said.
Melton said the fire started in the den area, and was "electrical in nature." The house was "heavily involved" upon firefighters' arrival.
The Statesboro Fire Department CAFE (Citizens Assistance in Fire Emergencies) unit also responded, he said. The CAFE unit is solely funded and operated by volunteers and donations, and offers a comfortable place for victims to stay while the situation is assessed, as well as provides food, coffee and drinks to the victims and firefighters, Melton said.
The Bulloch County Chapter of the American Red Cross also assisted the couple, he said.
Anyone who would like to offer assistance to the victims or learn more about volunteering with the CAFE unit can dial the Statesboro Fire Department at 764-FIRE (3473).
