If you are a regular at CHOPS in Statesboro, then you probably know its resident bartender Scott Martin. Martin has been bartending there off and on for the last several years.
The Georgia Southern alum has decided that it is time to go out on his own, and is in the process of renovating the former location of Dos Primos on Lanier Drive at the intersection of Lanier Drive and Chandler Road. Martin's new restaurant is going to be called The Sports Page.
"I have been working in restaurants for the last ten years," Martin said. "I have been looking for a location for three years or so, and when this one came open, I knew that it could be renovated and be just what I was looking for. It has been quite a project, but we are getting close."
Martin and his crew have done an immense amount of work on the restaurant, and have basically renovated the interior from the ground up, including new flooring, fixtures, paint, a large new bar area, and new seating. When I was there, Martin was getting ready for the kitchen renovations.
"I want people to walk in here and feel comfortable like they are at their neighborhood sports bar," he said. "There will be a number of T.V.'s scattered throughout, and we will have a full kitchen. Oysters are going to be a signature for us."
Martin said that he wants local residents to know that this isn't going to be what they would consider to be a "college bar", and he is hoping to attract locals.
"Even though we are located adjacent to Georgia Southern's campus in the midst of student housing, I really want local residents to come here," he said. "It is important to be as busy as we possibly can year round, offsetting the seasonality of the student population. Also, it would be nice just to have a good mix, a place that everyone can enjoy."
Martin and his partner are in the process of receiving the necessary permits and licenses to open. "I would like to be open by August 1. From a construction standpoint, that shouldn't be an issue, it's just a matter of permitting, and approval by the building inspectors and the fire marshal."
Martin said the restaurant's Facebook page should be up in the next week.
So, until next Tuesday, I bid you au revoir.
