Inside Bulloch Business with Jan Moore - Help a friend and the Boys and Girls Club

I'm sure that many of you are aware of the grave health crisis facing local dentist and Statesboro native Dr. Hudson Powell. He is diagnosed with stage four cancer and is undergoing treatment.
Powell has deep roots in our community and many, many friends. For these reasons, I wanted you all to know about an event that is being held in October - the 1st Annual Wells Fargo Advisors Boys and Girls Club Golf Tournament.
According to a press release issued by the tournament's chairman Randy Hill, all of the proceeds generated by the tournament, including donations, will go directly to the Boys and Girls Club of Bulloch County in Powell's honor, and Powell was named honorary chairman of this year's event,
We live in a very generous and giving community where charitable fundraising is an integral part of who we are and is fairly common place.
Having said that, this particular event really tugs at my heart, because Powell is "one of the good guys."
I cannot think of a single time when I have seen Powell that he hasn't asked me about my family, and then stood there waiting intently on my answer. He is truly concerned about our community and those that live here, and has donated a significant amount of his time helping others.
Local realtor Bubba Renfrow self publishes a newsletter every month titled "Bubba's Buddies." In this past July's newsletter, Renfrow wrote about Powell. He spoke of his intelligence and athletic ability, but most importantly, he spoke of the courage and example that Powell is setting as he faces cancer.
I intend to honor Powell's love of our community and service to others by participating in this event. I hope that many of you will feel the call to join me.
The tournament is being held Oct. 1 at Forest Heights Country Club. For more information you can contact Walt Garvin by phone at 764-3084 or email at
You can also contact Randy Hill by phone at 764-1840 or by email at randy.hill@
So, until next Tuesday, I bid you au revoir.
