A Claxton man was arrested Monday, charged with the felony murder of a woman whose body was found Sunday afternoon in a South Mulberry Street, Statesboro home.
James Dexter Porter, 46, street address unavailable, is being held without bond in the Bulloch County Jail, according to jail records.
Statesboro police are investigating the homicide after finding the body of a woman in a South Mulberry Street home Sunday afternoon.
Monday night, Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch said the victim's identity is being withheld until family members are notified.
The victim is a 50-year-old black female. The body is slated to be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Savannah Tuesday morning, he said.
Police were called around 5:30 p.m. Sunday to conduct a welfare check on a resident at the 100 block of South Mulberry Street, said Statesboro Police Community Information Specialist Madison Bridges.
Unable to get the victim to come to the door or answer the telephone, officers entered the home and found the victim deceased, she said.
Futch said the victim had been dead "between six to eight hours" before discovery.
"This incident has been assigned to detectives of the Statesboro Police Department's Criminal Investigations bureau for investigation," Bridges said. "This investigation remains ongoing and further information will be released as it becomes available."
The case has been turned over to the District Attorney's Office for prosecution, she said.
